SC reprimanded the Center regarding the pension of ex-servicemen, said – you cannot take the law in your hands
The Supreme Court on Monday expressed displeasure over the payment of pension dues in installments under One Rank One Pension. The apex court said that the Defense Ministry should not try to take the law into its hands.
The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over the non-payment of pensions to retired personnel of the armed forces under the One Rank One Pension (OROP) policy. Taking a stern stand, the Supreme Court today once again said that the Center will have to withdraw the notification issued on January 20 regarding the payment of OROP dues. This is the second time in a month that the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the matter.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud reprimanded the Defense Ministry and said that you should not try to take the law into your hands. Along with this said that the notification of January 20 should be withdrawn. Only then will the Center hear the application for more time to pay the pension arrears?
The Supreme Court has also sought a note from Attorney General R Venkataramani regarding the payment of pension arrears in the next seven days. In this, the government will have to tell how much payment is due and at what time it will be repaid. The next hearing of the matter will be held on March 20.
During the hearing, the Attorney General told the apex court that the Center has paid one installment of OROP dues to the ex-servicemen. He sought some more time for further payment. To this, the bench said first to withdraw the January 20 notification on payment of OROP dues, then we will consider your application for time.
