Neeraj Chopra creates another history, becomes Diamond League champion
Neeraj Chopra won Diamond League: Neeraj Chopra, making a spectacular comeback after a groin injury, has created history by throwing the javelin 88.44 meters away in Diamond League 2022. Chopra is the first Indian player to win this league.
Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra created history by winning the Diamond League Finals title in Zurich, Switzerland. Neeraj is the first Indian athlete to win this title. Neeraj has captured this title by throwing a good 88.44 meters away.
Neeraj also made it to the finals of Diamond League 2017 and 2018. But then they finished seventh and fourth. This time the Indian athlete left no stone unturned and won the title. With this, he has also qualified for the 2023 World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
Neeraj had a poor start in the Diamond League finals. His first throw was a foul. In the second round, he took the lead by throwing 88.44 meters away and then continued till the end. He threw 88.00 meters in the third, 86.11 meters in the fourth, 87.00 meters in the fifth and 83.60 meters in the sixth attempt.
In the Diamond League final, Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Jakob Wadlech of the Czech Republic came second with a best throw of 86.94m and Germany's Julian Weber (83.73) came third. Apart from this, Neeraj has won Gold in Olympics in 2021, Gold in Asian Games in 2018, Gold in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and a Silver medal in World Athletics Championship in 2022.
Recently, Neeraj had given India a silver medal in the World Athletics Championships. He became only the second athlete after Anju Bobby George (2003) to do so. In the final, Neeraj had thrown javelin to a distance of 88.13 meters and won the silver medal. But Neeraj Chopra was hurt in its final. He was also seen wrapping a bandage on the thigh. Due to the same injury, Neeraj was not able to participate in the Commonwealth Games 2022.
