Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has announced that users will be able to pay for blue tick verification through Meta Verified. The service will be available to individuals, and will cost $11.99 a month on the web, or $14.99 for iPhone users. The subscription provides users with a blue badge, increased visibility for their posts, protection against impersonators and easier access to customer service. The change will not affect previously verified accounts, but could increase the visibility of smaller users who become verified via the paid feature. The feature will be available in Australia and New Zealand initially, with no timeline for a global rollout. In November, Elon Musk introduced Twitter Blue, a subscription service that gave users access to additional features. The move follows Apple's optional feature that stops online activity being tracked, and the growing realisation among social media users that their data is being used to sell them products.
