America's top investigative agency FBI Director Christopher Wray has said that China has stolen the most data in the world on American enterprises and individuals. Ray's statement came just a day after US President Joe Biden met Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Speaking at a meeting of the US Homeland Security Committee, Ray said that one of the major security concerns for the country's security is the social media app TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. Ray said that TikTok falls under China's 2017 National Intelligence Law and is bound to share the intelligence it collects. Ray said that there is a strong possibility of the Chinese government using the data of about 80 million Americans as a weapon. The FBI chief said China is the "greatest long-term threat to our nation's ideas, innovation and economic security".
Ray said China's "huge hacking program" is the world's largest. China has stolen more personal and business data from Americans than any other country.
This is not the first time that TikTok has come under scrutiny by US authorities on suspicion of malicious activities. Former US President Donald Trump had already raised concerns about these apps and US Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Mark Warner as well as Republican Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr agreed.
In addition, both Rubio and Mike Gallagher recently called for an outright ban against TikTok in an opinion piece that blamed China for its alleged misuse of the app, which is used to track a mobile device's location. May be used to track and collect internet-browsing data.
Some branches of the US government, including the US military, have already banned their respective personnel from installing this app on their mobile devices.
