Budget 2023: Sports Ministry becomes rich, a bumper increase of more than 700 crores in the budget
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has increased the sports budget by Rs 723.97 crore this year. This year, Rs 3397.32 crore has been allocated to the Sports Ministry. This is Rs 723.97 crore more than last year's budget. Apart from this, Rs 1045 crore has been allocated for Khelo India.
The Narendra Modi government has presented the last budget of its second term. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the General Budget for the year 2023-24 in Parliament today. This year, there has been a bumper increase of more than 700 crores in the sports budget. The Finance Minister has allocated Rs 3397.32 crore to the Sports Ministry in the budget. This is Rs 723.97 crore more than last year's budget.
In view of the spectacular performance of Indian players in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 and Commonwealth Games 2022, the Government of India has increased the sports budget this year. Indian players won a total of seven medals in the Tokyo Olympics. At the same time, India won 61 medals in the Commonwealth Games played in Birmingham.
During the Corona period, the central government made a huge cut in the sports budget. The effect of this was clearly visible in the arrangement of the players. But after that, in the last general budget, the government had increased Rs 305.58 crore. The sports budget in the year 2020-21 was Rs 2826.92 crore. It was cut by Rs 230.78 crore in 2021-22 i.e. the sports budget in 2021-22 was Rs 2596.14 crore, which was revised to Rs 2757.02 crore.
Last year, an increase of Rs 305.58 crore was made in the support budget. Last year the total sports budget was 3062.60. Talking about Khelo India, Rs 1045 crore has been allocated for it in 2023-24. Whereas earlier in 2022-23, an increase of Rs 316 crore 29 lahks was made in the Khelo India program and it was increased to Rs 974 crore.
Rs 890.42 crore was given in the budget of 2020-21. After this, the budget of Khelo India was also cut in 2021-22. This year the government cut Rs 232.71 crore. Which reduced to Rs 657.71 crore. The budget received by the Sports Authority of India (Sai) has been increased by Rs 36.09 crore. Last year this budget was increased to Rs 749.43 crore, which is Rs 785.52 crore for 2023-24. Rs 660.41 crore was allocated in 2021-22, while the allocation in the BE 2020-21 was Rs 500 crore.
